I recently got a call from a man in Fort Worth, Texas who wanted to know what I thought would be a good business idea for him. He’s a good salesman, and he wants to be an entrepreneur, but his last couple of business ideas went south. I started describing what he should do to make a good decision on a business idea, and I realized that what I was describing also applies to business owners who want to add new products or services to their existing business. I thought it would be a good idea to share my thoughts, so here goes… Acid Test Your Business Idea Test # 1 – Believe in what you are selling The first test for a business idea overall is to do or sell something that you are passionate about, and that you can have fun with. Being in business for yourself demands [...]

I was deeply touched by an email from a friend today, and could not help looking at the state of small businesses in America and deciding to share what was shared with me. I think the idea is important enough to be given serious consideration. The future of American jobs and American business may well depend on it during the upcoming season of giving. As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. Let’s make this year different. This year Americans should seriously consider giving the gift of genuine concern for other Americans and the small businesses they own that provide jobs for Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there [...]

I often get asked by my business and practice owner clients for good ideas for marketing to attract new patients and customers. I am a huge proponent of promoting because, done correctly, it drives up patient and customer counts, and drives up income. Here are my thoughts and ideas. Referrals Are Pure Gold I know you have heard this before, and it is absolutely true. But equally important to asking for referrals, and running a referral program, is finding an inexpensive, easy way to show appreciation to those who refer patients or customers to you. I have found this SOCProgram works great and I use it all the time to send appreciation cards and even small high quality but inexpensive gifts, right from my computer. Check it out and try it out in step 2 for free. You can mail 2 cards at no cost to you, so mail one [...]

I’ve noticed that, in letters, e-mails and conversation, more and more people are using the phrase “flourish and prosper” recently and I wondered just how many have actually analyzed what that actually means in terms of business money management, and just how it can be accomplished. Socrates said, “The beginning of wisdom is a definition of terms“ so, by habit, I went to the oldest set of dictionaries that I own to get the purest definition of flourish, and here is what I found: Flourish (verb intransitive) to do well and be prosperous; to be in a state of activity and production; to reach a height of development or influence; to increase in health, wealth, happiness, honor, comfort or whatever is desirable. [Webster Third International Dictionary © 1909] So if we can flourish, then we have a much better chance of being truly prosperous. How can we carry out the actions [...]

Business Money Management – To Get Your Retirement Savings Today, I want to talk to you about How To Start Your Own Retirement Savings Plan It’s common knowledge that the American Social Security program is in catastrophically bad financial shape, and that those retiring in just a few years cannot depend on getting anywhere near what they need or expected from that system. Regardless of how far from, or close to, retirement you are, you should know your business money management plan needs to include a self-funded retirement savings plan for your financial security. So let’s talk about how to start one FAST! You’ve probably heard the old saying, Pay Yourself First, and that is some of the best business money management advice you will ever get. If you don’t pay you into a retirement savings plan, who will? So how do you do that? Here’s how. Your weekly Business [...]

Your business money management future hangs in the balance. There are few political events in our lifetime that have the potential for greater impact on the U.S. economy and your business economy than the upcoming elections. When the election dust settles on November 2nd, two scenarios are possible: Scenario A: Our leaders in Washington are emboldened by the election results and eager to raise taxes on businesses, spend even more on economic stimulus, housing market bailouts and other government mandated programs, Or … Scenario B: They are thrown out of office or further chastened by voters who are fed up with the recent explosion in government deficits and debts. In just 37 days from today, you will have the opportunity to impact which of these scenarios will actually occur,, and what the impact will be on the financial future of your business, and all the other businesses across America that [...]

You aren’t making money when you are fixing the copier, calling the plumber to get the toilet fixed, bypassing the Office Manager by talking to the scheduler about the need to keep the appointment book 95% full, calling patients to remind them of their appointment, or worrying about how you are going to pay bills at the end of [...]

Blogging is becoming the fastest way to market a business on the internet, and it is huge. Unlike advertising, blogs create instant credibility because readers know that a blog usually has quality content that is newsworthy, so they trust the content. With all the hard work you put into a blog to insure the content is high quality, you should be financially rewarded for your efforts. But according to David Risley, a six figure income blogger, most bloggers make barely enough to buy a cup of coffee. David decided to change that situation by sharing his Six Figure Blogger Blueprint Manual with selected people. The good news is that I have his permission to share it with my readers AT NO CHARGE – You can claim your free copy of this manual by clicking here. But you better hurry because what I don’t know is how long he’ll allow this [...]

Major changes are happening in the way businesses operate. Here are our predictions for 2010 and throughout the next decade. Money Management Prediction 1 – Business Operations Will Be Streamlined For More Efficiency. With the technological advance of computers and the Internet, faster communications at lower costs will become even more important to increase efficiency and production with less chance of error. This will show up in more electronic faxes being sent and received by e-mail instead of using costly fax telephone lines. (We recommend checking out eFax and MetroFax for these secure communications) Money Management Prediction 2 – There Will Be More Complex Computer Data Security Issues. Enhanced computer security issues will become the most important to protect a person’s information as well as data files. Backing up data files in a remote location that double encrypts the information will give the computer owner more peace of mind than having only [...]

Hold onto your wallets, and tighten up your money management controls! Here is a brief summary of tax law changes for 2010. By Patti S. Spencer of Spencer Law Firm The New Year brings many tax changes. Many tax breaks are phased out. The changes below are the current state of the law. It is always possible for Congress to act to extend or replace disappearing provisions. The House passed a bill that extended many of these provisions, but the Senate was unable to schedule a vote on it. The Senate has been tied in knots over the health care bill. Roth IRA conversions Starting in 2010 the income cap for converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is eliminated. Now anyone can do a Roth conversion. If the conversion is done in 2010, taxpayers can spread the income tax attributable to it over two years: 2011 and 2012. Note [...]

Many people set new goals for the New Year…losing weight…stopping smoking…cleaning out closets…but what about your financial goals? If you set your financial goals, business and personal, and get to work figuring out how to reach those goals, you can improve your financial condition. Make your goals realistic but make them a bit of a stretch too…after all the point is you need to be able to plan on how you are going to reach the goal. Don’t just pull a number out of thin air and then getting discouraged because there is no way you are going to make it. One way to start your plan is to work backwards, starting with what you want to achieve. Wealth can be measured by your net worth, so that is the place to start. Figure out what your personal net worth is right now by adding up the value of all [...]

As the U.S. and global economy continues to struggle and credit gets tighter, steady cash flow becomes more and more important to the survival of a business. One source that has been around for decades is accounts receivable factoring; also referred to as invoice factoring. This tool has become an important small business money management strategy. Invoice factoring is not just for manufacturers. Many types of business owners, including Dentists, Chiropractors, and other healthcare providers have turned to this method to insure a steady stream of cash into their businesses.
The tax planning clock is clicking away toward the end of the year. Is your business ready to take advantage of the tax saving measures available to you? Tax planning is essential for business owners, and should be done on a quarterly basis. However, it’s not too late if you do it before mid-December. Here are some words of wisdom from financial planner, P. Christopher Music. Well, the year is coming to an end and many business owners are meeting with their accountants and tax advisors to figure out how to reduce that inevitable income tax burden coming in April. Here are a few strategic ways to keep some more of that money at home. Business owners are often successful in earning some money beyond the expenses of acquiring it—in short, profit. The only problem is, the profit is taxed. So, we work with our tax advisors to lower this [...]

Mark Hale, super sales professional and owner of Wilson Printing was gracious enough to share some marketing and sales advice with you, our loyal readers, PLUS he offers you a gift at the end! The simple law of business is that “Business goes where it is invited”. If you are going to take your business to the next level you are going to have to stop looking at marketing and advertising like an accountant and start looking at your business like a marketer. When things slow down, the first thing the bean counters and accountant types want to do is cut expenses. The first line item on the P&L they come to is advertising. When you cut your advertising you are in effect speeding up the downward spiral of your sales. 1. Business goes where it is invited. If you are not advertising, you are losing business. Do you ignore it, or look at the total income and the bottom line net income and then toss it in a drawer or file folder without analyzing it? If that’s the case, then you are missing out on some potential opportunities to increase your sales and your profits. Smart money management practices include staying in control of how your company’s income is being used and to make adjustments that are in the company’s best financial interest. There are many ways to analyze your P&L to identify some lost income opportunities; here are just a few. 1 – Pull last month’s P&L statement so you can compare it with the current month’s statement. 2 – Compare the Total Income figures and the bottom line Net [...]

The following is an interview with Sandra Simmons, Founder and President of Money Management Solutions Inc. on the state of business money management in the United States. The current economic crisis should serve as a harsh money management lesson to all of us. Every economy, whether large or small, be it a large corporation or the household income, will always be at risk to the degree that it relies upon credit for its survival. It is not that credit is inherently evil or bad; rather, credit and living beyond one’s means is a tempting financial seductress which will always threaten to wreck our financial ships upon hidden fiscal shoals. The problem with credit is risk. Whenever you take out a loan, use a line of credit, or even use a credit card, you are taking a financial risk to some degree. That risk is that you will have enough money [...]

There is one area that most schools are not able to adequately prepare most future Doctors and Healthcare practitioners for — that is the realities of opening and running their own practice. Setting up accounts, purchasing supplies, running a staff, money management and financial planning are just a few of the very real pitfalls that can sabotage a practice. If a practitioner could just concentrate on helping their patients all day and not worry about the business end, many doctors would be more than happy. But in a healthcare office there are bills to pay and payrolls to meet, and with the current state of the economy, many practitioners are having a tough time of it financially. “Over 20 years ago, I became a health care practitioner primarily to help people with their health. I went to classes, took the tests, and graduated from one of the largest chiropractic colleges [...]

In these economic times when workers are losing their jobs and business owners are struggling to survive, I believe that both business owners and workers alike need to adopt the mindset that they are willing to do Whatever It Takes (WIT) to maintain their money management goals and their own economic well-being. Now, I’m not advocating doing anything illegal or unethical in terms of money management. I’m just making this comment because I have noticed a curious attitude among some workers here in the U.S., whether employed or unemployed, who are in debt and struggling. There seems to be a prevailing attitude that: 1 – The business owner is my enemy. 2 – I’m a victim and everyone else is to blame for my financial situation. 3 – I don’t need to practice smart money management. I’m in debt, but I’m too good / educated / valuable to get a second [...]

One of the things I admire about my friends is their amazing ability to carve out a niche for themselves and create a business using their knowledge, skill and sheer determinism. Rosalie Hamilton is no exception. She not only created the busines of Expert Witness Marketing, she is the ONLY person who does what she does, and she does it incredibly well. I asked her to share with my readers a bit about what it means to be an Expert Witness and how people get into and earn money from this lucrative pastime. Here, in her entertaining style, are her thoughts: Watching actors play the part of an expert witness in police and lawyer shows on television can give an inaccurate or at least an incomplete picture of what that job is like. First of all, being an expert witness is rarely a full-time job; it is usually done part-time, as [...]

Sent to me by a friend, this is a good reminder that despite the economic crisis and runaway recession each of us are in control of our own future, if only we agree to disagree His teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” and was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” Thomas Edison’s 1000 inventions came during the Panic of 1873 — 6 years — and the Long Depression — 23 years. He did not speak until he was four years-old and did not read until he was seven. His parents thought he was “sub-normal,” and a teacher described him as “mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams.” Albert Einstein survived one Long Depression, three panics and Post WWI Recession. He failed sixth grade and was subsequently defeated in many elections until he (Winston Churchill) became Prime Minister at the age of 62. [...]

Small businesses that have money management and debt problems are anxiously waiting for the new credit card rules to go into effect in July 2010. But the majority of business owners need immediate debt relief. While the new rules will help, for some it will be too little, too late. The main problem with using credit to finance your business is that it is a big risk. That risk, of course, is you are promising your future production to pay back that financial obligation in full and in a timely manner. There is really nothing wrong with using credit as long as there is virtually no risk involved in paying the money back. There is a lot wrong with being over your head in debt and being handcuffed to the credit cards. This is risky in the extreme, because with just one or two bad months, the house built on [...]
